A new generation of Brillouin ultra-high resolution spectrometers based on VIPA technology
Light Machinery Inc.’s Brillouin spectrometer
Brillouin spectrometer is a non-contact testing tool that is widely used in remote sensing, materials science, and biomedicine. Brillouin spectroscopy detects fluctuations in acoustic modalities in solids and thermal density in liquid gases, and the spectral shift of this inelastically scattered light is generally in the subGHz range. Brillouin spectroscopy is a very weak signal, elastically scattered light (Rayleigh scattering or Mitchell scattering) that requires a spectrometer with very high spectral resolution, high spectral contrast, and high extinction ratio. In addition to the traditional Brillouin spectroscopy using a scanning grating monochromator and a method of light shooting, the most common way is to use a multi-scan Fabry-Perot interferometer. These methods sequentially scan each part of the spectrum, usually ranging from a few minutes to a few hours.
Light Machinery combines a VIPA-based ultra-high resolution spectrometer and a built-in Brillouin spectrometer based on the standard tunable “trap” filter device (GREENKILLER), which can effectively suppress stray signals, obtain spectral contrast greater than 80dB, obtain each detail of the Brillouin spectrum in a single spectral acquisition, and the acquisition time can be as small as ms level, compared to the scanning method, the improvement of the test time of this system is much greater than an order of magnitude. If the spectral range is greater than 2 nm, the low-frequency Raman spectra of the sample can also be obtained at the same time.
Light Machinery’s HYPERFINE spectrometer performs lateral and longitudinal dispersion through VIPA and grating, respectively, and obtains the two-dimensional spectrum of incident light in a single acquisition, thereby resolving the ultra-fine spectrum of incident light, up to spectral resolution of up to 1pm.
